Shakeology® Sunshine Bars

I am thinking that I will be posting more Shakeology recipes on this blog in the very near future, I am even going to (try) to post them daily! Let me know what you guys think – do you have any special requests?

Today’s recipe is for Shakeology® Sunshine Bars, a great no-bake treat to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Calories: 277 • Fat: 7g • Saturated Fat: 1g • Cholesterol: 3mg • Sodium: 120g • Carbohydrate: 40g • Fiber: 6g • Sugar Total: 12g • Protein: 18g

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops Chocolate Shakeology®
  • 3 scoops egg white powder
  • 2 cups oats
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • 4 Tbsp. honey
  • 4 Tbsp. almond butter
  • 2 bananas, mashed
  • 2 Tbsp. wheat germ
  • 2 Tbsp. flaxseed
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon

Directions

  1. Mix all dry ingredients together.
  2. Add almond milk, honey, and bananas and mix well with a spatula or your hands.
  3. After it’s well mixed, put mixture in an 8″ x 8″ pan. Cover with plastic wrap and press down to flatten into pan. Refrigerate for 3 hours.
  4. Remove from fridge, cut into 10 squares.

Wishlist – Summer Athletic Wear

Like I mentioned previously, a good athletic wardrobe can empower you in your workouts, give you better results, and make you feel great while kicking butt. Plus, it can be a fun “treat” to yourself when you’ve hit a specific goal.

Here’s a suggestion – For every workout you complete, put a dollar in a jar. At the end of 3 months of workouts, go out any buy yourself a new outfit (in a new size!) to pay yourself back for all that hard work you’ve put in.

I’ve recently been doing a lot of online “window shopping” for fitness gear, and I’ve come across a plethora of amazing finds. Here are some of the picks that have been at the top of my summer athletic wish list:

Shakeology® gave him ABS!

Okay, I really don’t want to embarrass the man in my life – but I just had to share this with you all.

Check out these pictures of Ryan, the peanut butter to my jelly. The left picture was taken in August of last year, on our trip to the Bahamas. At this point, I had no complaints about Ry’s body whatsoever.

However, the pictures in the center and on the right were taken last week – because baby’s got some amazing abs going on. Check them out!

All that’s changed for Ryan is that he started drinking Shakeology®. When we arrived in the Bahamas, a friend we were staying with had a NutriBullet, and Ryan got really into making shakes during our stay. When we got home, we purchased our own NutriBullet for home, and he started using the Shakeology® powder in the shakes he was making. He’s been drinking a shake along with me every morning since.

I have to say, I’m very impressed. I had always paired my Shakeology® with a Beachbody workout program, and saw all of its amazing results and benefits… but Ry is proof that by balancing out your nutrition, your body can change in amazing ways on its own, too! cx-pushphase“Go Heavy or Go Home!”

That’s the motto of Chalene Johnson during Month 2, the Push Phase, of the amazing ChaLEAN Extreme® program – that I just completed yesterday! I can’t believe I’m 2 months into this program, I swear it feels like I just started! One month left to go, and I think I’m going to be really sad when it’s over. (Hey, it’s a good thing I bought the Deluxe DVDs when I did so I can continue on after the 90 day period!)

The Push Phase is quite different from the from month of the program, but scheduled similarly to the Burn Phase.

A typical week of the Push Phase looks like this:

  • Day 1 – Push Circuit 1
  • Day 2 – Rest
  • Day 3 – Push Circuit 2
  • Day 4 – Burn Intervals & Ab Burner/Extreme Abs
  • Day 5 – Push Circuit 3
  • Day 6 – Burn It Off! & Recharge
  • Day 7 – Rest

Which, as you can see – is basically the same format as the Burn Phase, but with a switch to the Push DVDs. It’s a great schedule, with sufficient time for your body to recuperate after such hard work!

I found I really needed the rest days this month, as I upgraded my weights throughout the month and really pushed my muscles – and they needed time to rest before putting them to work all over again! So, the two rest days this month were like a blessing from above.

Here’s what the workouts looked like:

Push Circuit 1 (approx 34 min) – Along with the schedule itself being similar in this month, the format of the circuit workouts is very similar as well. The goal in this circuit is to fail at 6-8 reps, in contrast to the 10-12 reps from the Burn Phase. This workout focuses on arms and shoulders primarily, but like all CX workouts, there is plenty of leg action as well. Hellooooo squats!

Push Circuit 2 (approx 35 min) – More high weight, low rep training focusing on lats, delts, shoulders and legs. It’s really a lot of the same idea in this program – just different exercises to do in each Circuit!

Burn Intervals (approx 50 min) – Same program as reviewed in the Burn Phase, click here to read!

Ab Burner (approx 10 min) - Same program as reviewed in the Burn Phase, click here to read!

Extreme Abs (approx 17 min) – Another short and quick Ab routine, but much more intense than Ab Burner in my opinion. I kept my heart rate up with this program and really felt the burn in my abs!

Push Circuit 3 (approx 33 min) – Another workout similar to Circuits 1 & 2 – focusing on arms and legs.

Burn It Off! (approx 35 min) - Same program as reviewed in the Burn Phase, click here to read!

Recharge (approx 20 min) - Same program as reviewed in the Burn Phase, click here to read!

Overall 

I was really impressed to see how much progress I’d made in my strengh this month. When I first started this program, I was using 5 lb weights, and managed to squeak my way up to 12.5 lbs by the end of the first month. This month, I pushed way beyond that and had to upgrade to using my boyfriend’s 15 lb and 20 lb weights, and by the end of the month, I was using them consistently throughout all Push Circuit exercises – talk about a change in strength in only two months!

1520weightsAgain, like any other program you are doing – it’s all about what you feel comfortable with, and you should only be lifting what’s within your capability. But this wonderful thing about this program is that it really makes you push yourself and realize you are far stronger than what you think your capabilities are! As Chalene says, you don’t know what you can do until you try! So it’s worth making the effort to push yourself and see how far you can go – you just might be surprised! I surely know I was!

Once again the printable workout sheets (available here from Teach Beachbody) are a great way to keep your workouts tracked, so you can know if you want to increase your weight or reps the next week.

Results

I wasn’t surprised to see that I did not lose any weight this month – actually it stayed exactly the same as last month. However, that’s only because I know I put on a ton of muscle in the Push Phase! My measurements also changed significantly – I lost almost 5″ from my body (mainly in my hips and legs). So, knowing that I shrunk my body, increased my strength and muscle size, and didn’t change the number on the scale – I’m thrilled! I know my body has gotten a lot more strong and lean this month.

Conclusion

I’m loving this program. Seriously, I never thought I’d be someone who was addicted to strength training, but that day has truly come. I’ve been recommending the program to anyone that will listen – it’s amazing how empowered I feel after pushing myself so hard. I’m excited to see what the final Lean Phase will bring, and what it will do for my body! Thank you, Chalene!

New & Improved Greenberry is HERE!

improvedgreenberryIt was announced a few days ago that Beachbody was going to be announcing an “improvement” with one of their Shakeology® products, and I have been SO eager to find out which flavor was getting makeover! After much debate and guessing, it was announced that Greenberry was the chosen flavor!

Basically, Beachbody has now brought Greenberry Shakeology® up to speed with the other flavors that have been currently modified and improved (such as Chocolate and Tropical Strawberry).

So, what’s changed in the new Greenberry formula?

  • Reduced calories from 140 to 130 per serving
  • Reduced Sugars from 11g to 6g per serving! (5 grams less than before!)
  • Reduced Total Carbs from 19g to 13g per serving
  • Increased Protein from 16g to 17g per serving
  • Fiber increased from 3g to 4g due to the addition of pea protein and increase in super greens.
  • Reduced fructose necessary in the formula due to the addition of Luo Han Guo
  • We added Shakeology®’s newest superfoods: Luo Han Guo, Moringa and Himalayan Salt.
  • We increased the amount of super-greens (it is Greenberry after all!) and included an even more delicious natural flavor which works more harmoniously with the formula to makes Greenberry sweeter and fruitier.
  • Green tea used is no longer decaffeinated — therefore it is less “processed”.
    • (Note: Green tea is naturally very low in caffeine).
  • Plus we incorporated the improvements we made recently to Chocolate:
    • More concentrated grasses. We’re using grass juice powders. The grasses are first pressed into juices—which allows us to concentrate the nutrients—then the juice is further concentrated into a powder. (Before we were just grinding the grasses themselves into powders)
    • Better strain of probiotics
    • No suma root or blue-green algae
    • Still Low Glycemic Index

Music Monday – Lana Del Rey

I’ve been a Lana Del Rey fan for a while now, and loved her debut album Born To Die. I was pleased as punch to find out that she was providing a song for Baz Luhrmann’s new “The Great Gatsby” film. I am a ridiculously huge Baz fan – the Moulin Rouge soundtrack remains one of my favorites to this day.

So basically the marriage between a Baz film and Lana is pure heaven.

Now, mix that in with the overly glamourized and sultry nature of “The Great Gatsby” as a story, and you have a recipe for utter perfection.

I am excited to hear the rest of the soundtrack which will be released tomorrow, but in the meantime, this first track from Lana called “Young and Beautiful” is playing on repeat on my iPhone.

The first track off of She & Him’s much anticipated new album, “Volume 3″ doesn’t disappoint on any level – it’s bubbly, fresh and true to the group’s folky core. “Never Wanted Your Love” is led once again by Zooey Deschanel’s soulful vocals, and M. Ward’s fantastic musical arranging, and it makes me feel like Spring is really here!

It was an easy pick for Music Monday, as the temperatures outside are steadily rising and this is definitely the perfect track for a Spring evening drive through town!

How to Break Through Your Fitness Plateau

Fitness plateaus are very common for those who exercise regularly. Even the most dedicated fitness guru may encounter times when their workouts don’t seem as effective, and their progress seems to come to a halt. By making a few small changes to your fitness routine, you should be able to push through that plateau and be on the right journey to achieving your goals!

Monitor Your Calories – It is important (especially if you are noticing a plateau) to monitor your daily caloric intake and what you are burning each day during exercise. You won’t make any progress if you don’t have an accurate understanding of how many calories a day you are burning, and thus allowing yourself to take in.  A heart rate monitor and a logging app are two very important tools that can be utilized to track these numbers. I use a Polar heart rate monitor to log my workouts, and MyFitnessPal to log my meals. The great part of MyFitnessPal is that you can access your logs from both your mobile device and from your desktop, so it is easy to keep track of everything you are intaking. Keeping your numbers in line is a crucial first step for any fitness program.

Recalculate Your Calories – If you have been following the same calorie guidelines since beginning your fitness journey, it may be time to reevaluate – especially if you have already lost a bit of weight. Re-calculate your BMI and see if your calorie needs have changed.

Change Up Your Routine – Have you been doing the same program for months, without change? This could be the very reason your progress has come to a halt. Like our minds, our bodies easily get “bored”, and get used to our fitness routine – as they adapt very quickly to what we put them through. By changing up your workouts, you will effectively change your body. Try new workouts and activities, and change them up every thirty days or so. If you are stuck with only being able to do one routine, then mix up your current workout by adding in weights or high intensity interval training. Whatever you do – keep your body guessing and it will thank you in the end.

Build Up Muscle – If there’s one thing I’ve learned through the use of ChaLEAN Extreme, it’s that muscle burns fat! I used to be one of the many who were afraid of heavy weights because they didn’t want to “bulk up” – but believe me, this is a total myth! Women do NOT bulk up from strength training – they lean out – even while lifting heavy! The more muscle that you have in your body, the more calories you will burn throughout the day (even while you sleep). So pick up those weights and add them into your routine, and I guarantee you will notice a difference!

Start Your Day Off With Fitness – As much as I loathe them, morning workouts can really jump start your metabolism for the entire day. Whenever possible, try to get your workout accomplished in the morning, and your body will burn more calories throughout the day.

Clean Up Your Diet – 80% of our success comes from the kitchen – so the type of food that you put in your body is extremely important. Processed, junky foods can prohibit your body from being able to make the most of your workouts. Pay attention to what you are intaking and your body will take notice…. Fast! A product like Shakeology can help detoxify your body and keep you full and ready for an intense workout, with the best nutrients you can put in your body. Alternatively, Beachbody’s Ultimate Reset is a great way to “reset” your body and get your nutrition on track.

Stay Hydrated – Not drinking enough water can prohibit weight loss, and can actually cause you to retain water. Aim for 8 glasses a day, minimim – a gallon if you are highly active.

Get Some Rest! – It has been said that not sleeping enough can cause your body to hold onto body fat as a defense mechanism. Make sure that you are getting 7-8 hours a sleep a night to make the most out of your fitness routines, and to allow your body to properly recuperate.

They are individually wrapped wipes designed to cleanse your face, while leaving your skin soft. I’ve been a fan of witch hazel for years, but never have I found a product for cleansing the face before. Witch Hazel is a gentle and effective botanical extract with exceptional cleansing properties. I was curious about how gentle they would be, but I was very pleased at how soft my skin was after using them. beachbodylogoMost of you who read this blog regularly already know that I am a Beachbody Coach – but you may not completely understand what that means! What do I do as a Beachbody Coach? How might it benefit you?

First, let me give you a little background on my history with the Beachbody organization – one that I am happy to be a part of for over a year now!

My first encounter with Beachbody was through my Coach, Mandie, whom I met through our Tumblr blogs. We had similar interests, and got to chatting, and I found out that she was involved with Beachbody. When I decided to get started with the organization and its programs (my first being Brazil Butt Lift), I contacted Mandie because we had already built a good friendship, and I remember her saying in previous conversations that she could help me on my journey. So I signed up with BBL, with having her as my Coach, and it was honestly a life-changing decision.

She was always there (and continues to be) to answer any questions during my fitness journey – whether it related to a program specficially, my nutrition, or my supplements, such as Shakeology. Because Mandie and I established a great friendship along the way, I trusted her to recommend products and programs that were tailor-fit to my specific goals and needs in fitness. I knew she wouldn’t recommend anything that didn’t work, so with her guidance I tried other programs such as TurboFire, and great supplements like Shakeology and P90X Results and Recovery formula. Everything that Mandie and I worked on together dramatically helped my overall results, and I was very grateful for having such a smart cookie on my side – whenever I needed her.

I felt that I always had a true friend on my side, who had the information I was seeking along the way. The best part is – in the rare instance she didn’t have an answer for me – she’d get me one right away by contacting our upline (which, by the way, is an amazing group of highly successful people in this business – I really lucked out with a strong group of people in my corner!).

I always felt very comfortable, and never pressured, to become more involved with Team Beachbody, and eventually I knew that I wanted to help “pay it forward” by becoming an Active Team Beachbody Coach myself.

In conclusion, as a Beachbody Coach, it is my responsibility and passion to help others in the exact same way Mandie helped me. We can help suggest and recommend the very best workout programs for your specific fitness goals, support you throughout the entirety of your program of choice, recommend products and supplements that will compliment your efforts and give you the best results possible,  and also provide motivation and encouragement for you every step of the way – so you stay on track and achieve the goals that are so important to you.

The value of this type of support is immeasurable, and this is what I bring to the table as your Beachbody Coach. The results speak for themselves, and Beachbody customer have some amazing results! There is nothing more satisfying than hearing someone say “because of your help, I did not give up, and I reached my goals!” and knowing that you have positively impacted their lives. And that is why I am a Beachbody Coach.

Chalene’s Chocolate Shakeology Balls

While reading my copy of Chalene Johnson’s “Push”, I couldn’t help but skip around to the back to peruse the recipes for a while – and boy, are there some good ones included! One in particular popped out to me, for Chocolate Shakeology Balls. I’d seen variations online of a similar idea before, but had never actually given it a shot in my own kitchen.

I could kick myself that it took this long to try these out – they are delicious.

Chalene’s Chocolate Shakeology Balls are a healthy and quick treat for anyone needing a “quick fix” of nutrients or even a chocolate craving. They took only about 10 minutes to whip up, and Ry and I have been fighting over them in the freezer ever since. Consider making a double batch – I know I will next time around ;)

Chocolate Shakeology Balls

Servings: 6 Serving Size: 2 balls (makes 12 total)
Calories: 135 • Fat: 7g • Carbs: 13g • Fiber: 3 g • Protein: 8g • Sodium: 13 mg

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Chocolate PB2 powdered peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup all natural peanut butter
  • 1 cup quick oats
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesause
  • 1 scoop Chocolate Shakeology
  • Stevia, Truvia or your choice of sweetener, to taste (I used 3 tbsp. organic honey)

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl – it’s going to be pretty sticky at first! Once mixed, roll mixture into balls, Chalene suggests making them ping-pong ball sized, but I ended up going a little smaller. You can either eat them immediately (if you are impatient like me!) or you can stow them away in the freezer. They take a little longer to eat out of the freezer, and are a great snack any time of the day.

I just suggest you store them in the back of your freezer so they aren’t all gone when you go to grab one! ;)

MTV Movie Awards 2013 – Top 3 Picks

Is it just me, or were the MTV Movie Awards that aired last night… rather… blah?

I was so excited for the show last night, with Rebel Wilson hosting, and performances by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Selena Gomez, is promised to be an exciting night. However, the more the show went by, the more I realized… not much was happening.

On top of the show being on the boring side (Rebel was funny, but I felt she was holding back/nervous) the fashions were quite lackluster. In fact, I could only find 3 red carpet looks I wanted to share as my top picks – only THREE.

Brittany’s blonde locks were style to perfection in this angular cut. And her steel blue dress with shoulder accents was perfectly timed for this “edgy” awards show.

Selena looked fresh-faced and like the pop starlets I remember seeing on the MTV red carpet when I was younger. Loved this gilded ensemble – and her fun take on the pompadour braid!

Zoe’s look was classic, effortless and beautiful. The skirt fit perfectly, showing just enough sex appeal without being overtly gratuitous. Sexy and clean – I love it!
